Sue's Story - Painful Intercourse and a Retroverted Uterus

Sue is 22 years old, married and the mother of two children. She began to experience extremely painful intercourse shortly after the birth of her son in June 1997 and was diagnosed with a retroverted uterus.

"I was having problems with extreme pain during sex for quite some time. For about two years, we did it once a year. The pain was always in the back of my mind. I was always tense, scared that it was going to hurt. I'm sure it wasn't very enjoyable for my husband, who never really understood my pain anyway."

"I kept going to doctors and getting antibiotics. They told me I had a bladder infection, but I knew that didn't totally explain my pain."

Finally, Sue's mom made an appointment with a doctor she heard about through a friend. Dr. Neil Gladstone performed a pelvic exam on Sue and reproduced the pain she experienced during sex. He concluded that her pain was due to a retroverted uterus. "He understood why I was experiencing sharp, severe pain and sex hurt so badly."

Dr. Gladstone recommended the UPLIFT procedure to reposition Sue's uterus. Sue was relieved to finally have a diagnosis for her problem, though she was not happy about the prospect of surgery. Still she decided to go ahead with the UPLIFT procedure. "I really would have done anything to get rid of the pain."

The UPLIFT procedure was performed on an outpatient basis, and Sue went home the same day. "It was fast and easy and I recovered quickly." Sue was tired and sore for the first two days, but continued to get stronger over the next two weeks. After three weeks, she was in excellent condition. "All I have from it is a little tiny scar right below my belly button."

Sue recommends the UPLIFT procedure to other women experiencing similar problems. Sue no longer experiences pain during sex and she and her husband "do it a lot more "! Her husband was much more sympathetic once he realized that her difficulties with sex were due to a physical problem. "Once my husband realized that I had to have surgery to fix the problem, he understood and was sorry about all of his complaints." Sue also noted that after meeting the deductible, her insurance paid for the entire procedure.

Sue was treated at Katz, Gladstone and Rabin, PC, Riverdale, GA.
