AVESTA® Procedure for Vaginal Vault Prolapse
The AVESTA procedure is used to treat vaginal vault prolapse. Performed as
an outpatient procedure, specialized laparoscopic instruments are used to shorten
and strengthen the uterosacral ligaments that support the vagina.
Several small incisions are made in the abdominal wall. A laparoscope (camera)
is placed through one of the incisions. Other surgical instruments are placed
through additional small incisions. The main ligaments that support the vagina
are identified. Several stitches (sutures) are placed through the ligaments and
tightened. Shortening and strengthening the uterosacral ligaments restores support
to the top of the vagina, restoring it to a normal anatomic position. The AVESTA
procedure also lengthens the vagina which may have become shortened because of prolapse.
